FOR REFERENCE.

The international trade fair Vietnam Expo is one of the largest multi-industry trade and economic grounds in the South-East Asia, taking place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh by turns. In 2019 the trade fair featured over 600 companies from more than 25 countries. The number of trade visitors exceeded 21.5 thousand. The event is held under the aegis of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam.

Major exports from Belarus to Vietnam are potassium fertilizers, lorry trucks, dump trucks, tractors, tires, food products, frozen beef, synthetic yarn, and polyamides. There is a potential for dairy plants: their certification for export to Vietnam completed in 2020. Certification of meatpacking plants is under consideration.

The 2020 turnover between Belarus and Vietnam amounted to 178 USD Million (including export from Belarus to Vietnam – 95 USD Million). In 11 months of 2021 the turnover reached 164 USD Million (including export from Belarus to Vietnam – 65 USD Million).

Vietnam was the first of the South-East Asia countries to sign an agreement on a free trade area with the EAEU. The document is valid since 2016 and implies a range of benefits for the Belarusian exporters: zeroing of import duties, harmonization of customs registration measures, simplified access to the Vietnam government procurement market for the EAEU producers.

In economic terms, Vietnam is an appealing partner for Belarusian exporters. The country’s population is almost 100 mln people. The GDP growth of Vietnam before the pandemic was around 6-7% annually. In 2020 and 2021 it exceeded 2.5%. Foreign trade volume of Vietnam in nine months of 2021 increased by 24.4% compared to the same period last year and reached 483.1 USD Billion. Import figures are now the highest in the decade: in nine months of 2021 they reached 242.6 USD Billion – 30% more than in the same period of 2020. Key imports are machines and equipment, plastic and plastic products, oil, vehicles, food products, pet food.
